Bristol based multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and producer Conal Kelly is set to release his debut EP, Lifestyle, on September 2nd. The EP features previous singles I Wanna Be So Much More Than Your FriendHelp me Out and Keep Me Satisfied, which wereplayed on Radio 1 by Nels Hylton on Future Alternative, Jack Saunders and Gemma Bradley, as well as across BBC Introducing and BBC Radio Bristol.

Conal’s creative reach moves from pop to prog, from psychedelia to funk. Adept at everything he touches, his forthcoming debut EPLifestyle is the vision of a talent coming into bloom.   Crafting a genre-crossing brand of indie that is unmistakably his own, Conal Kellycombines driving grooves with smooth vocals, catchy melodies and dreamy guitars, resulting in a refreshing yet accessible strain of modern pop music.

Lifestyle is a quartet of songs that stand alone musically, but are linked by his fastidious approach to production, and a yearning to communicate. Largely written during the opening weeks of 2021, the EP was constructed during an explosion of activity triggered by lockdown inertia, the final stage of a break-up, and Conal’s decision to enter therapy. Having dropped the first three tracks as singles over the past few months, the only remaining previously unreleased song is the titular track of the EP.

I picked four that worked together cohesively,” Conal explains. “I wanted it to fit together as a body of work, but also show my range. It’s never one genre. It’s all different types of sounds. It means that every song sounds different, and that people have something to get their claws into.”

As for that final brand new song on the EP: “Lifestyle is me playing into the softer side of my writing; it’s a commentary on the current state of social media and how people obsess over how they’re perceived. For me it’s the perfect way to close the EP; sonically, its arc moves from a heavier punch-in-the-gut sound, to a lighter more relaxed tone. It also ties up the theme of ‘relationships’ for the EP as a whole; the opening track covering a romantic relationship, track 2 moving into a friendship, a track 3 into relationship with one’s self, and finally the relationship with other’s opinions/social media. “

It just helps to level the playing field a little, removes the gatekeepers.”
